This past Saturday, I had the honor of leading a church safety training with a group of men and women who left a lasting impression on me. They weren’t police officers. They weren’t SWAT operators. They weren’t being paid. In fact, they paid to be there.
They gave up their Saturday — one of the only quiet days many of them have — and they worked. Hard. From tactical movement drills to room entry techniques to decision-making under stress, they pushed through fatigue, frustration, and fear of failure. Not for a paycheck. Not for recognition.
But because they believe in the mission.
They believe that their church — their family of faith — deserves to be protected. And they’re willing to stand in the gap.
Sacrifice Isn’t Always Glamorous
Let’s be real: Sacrifice doesn’t usually come with spotlights and applause. It comes with early mornings, aching backs, and sometimes a little doubt about whether anyone notices.
But God notices.
He sees when you give up comfort for calling.
He sees when you serve without fanfare.
He sees when you choose purpose over passivity.
In Romans 12:1, Paul urges us to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
That’s what I witnessed Saturday: real worship.
Not just through songs or sermons — but through sweat, humility, and obedience.
A Higher Calling
We talk a lot in our trainings about being ready for the worst day — the day you pray never comes. That’s a sobering thing. But what inspires me even more is that these volunteers already answered a call most people never hear.
They didn’t wait for tragedy to get serious.
They didn’t wait for a crisis to get involved.
They showed up — now.
And that’s leadership. That’s love in action.
Jesus said in Matthew 23:11, “The greatest among you will be your servant.”
God Rewards the Hidden Work
You may never get a headline. Your pastor might forget to say thank you. Your family might not fully understand why you give up time, energy, and money to serve.
But I believe this with everything in me:
God sees what’s done in secret. And He rewards it.
Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
The seeds planted last Saturday — discipline, teamwork, faithfulness — will grow. Maybe into courage when it’s needed most. Maybe into someone else stepping up because they saw your example. Or maybe into a life saved that you’ll never even know about this side of heaven.
Final Thoughts
To the team who trained with me last weekend:
You may not wear a badge, but you carry a burden.
You may not be on a payroll, but you are on a mission.
And I am proud — deeply proud — to serve alongside people like you.
Keep showing up.
Keep sacrificing.
Because there’s no higher calling than protecting the people of God.
And in His Kingdom, nothing is wasted.
